Who Are You Really Talking To?

When it comes to voiceover, one of the biggest mistakes performers make is focusing only on “sounding authentic.” While authenticity is important, there’s something even more crucial: knowing who you’re talking to. Audience awareness in voiceover transforms an average performance into one that connects, persuades, and resonates.

Think about it. Are you speaking to:

  • An employee being onboarded? They need clarity, encouragement, and a sense of guidance.

  • A potential client? They want to know how your product or service will solve their problem.

  • An investor? They’re focused on results, metrics, and efficiency.

Each of these audiences requires a different delivery. The words you emphasize, the tone you use, and the pacing of your delivery should shift depending on who is listening.

Even outside business, audience awareness is key. In medical narration, for example, a doctor speaking to a patient sounds very different from a doctor addressing another healthcare professional. In e-learning, an adult learner responds differently than a young student exploring science for the first time.

“Before you record, ask yourself: Who am I talking to, and what do they need from me?”

Taking the time to identify your audience allows you to make deliberate choices in your performance. It’s not just about reading the words—it’s about connecting with the listener and giving them exactly what they need.

How to Apply Audience Awareness in Your Voiceover

  1. Analyze your script carefully. Look for cues about the listener. Who is this written for? What problem or question are they trying to solve?

  2. Adjust tone and emphasis. Words that are important to one audience might be irrelevant to another. Highlight what matters most to them.

  3. Consider pacing and energy. A patient or learner might need a slower, reassuring pace. A client or investor may prefer a confident, dynamic delivery.

  4. Visualize your listener. Imagine a specific person in front of you. This makes your performance more natural and engaging.

By keeping your audience front and center, your voiceover work becomes precise, intentional, and far more effective. Whether you’re recording commercials, e-learning modules, or corporate narration, audience awareness is the secret to performances that truly resonate.
