Where Should You Start in Voiceover?

When I talk to new voice actors, the first question I always get is: “Which genre should I start with?”
Years ago, the answer was simple: commercial. Produce a commercial demo, and that was your foot in the door. But the industry has grown—and so have your options.
Commercial work is exciting but highly competitive. Corporate and other non-broadcast genres can be a smarter place to start. Corporate might not sound glamorous, but it’s excellent -for not only for potential work in an extremely large market, but also for training you for authentic and genuine voice acting for any genre. You’re telling a story, representing a brand, and learning to communicate clearly—skills that apply to all voiceover acting..
Millions of companies need voiceover for training videos, internal communications, branding, and explainer content. That means plenty of opportunities to gain experience, build confidence, and see if voiceover is something you truly love.
“You don’t have to start with commercial to build a successful voiceover career.”
No matter what genre you pick, the foundation is always the same: acting, timing, POV, and connecting with your listener. Starting in non-broadcast work gives you space to grow, explore, and build confidence before stepping into commercial, animation, or promo.
Voiceover isn’t one-size-fits-all. Explore your options, find your fit, and grow at your own pace.
