If you’ve ever worked from home—especially in a quiet little booth—you know how lonely it can get. Those long stretches of recording, editing, emailing, auditioning…they can feel a little less cozy when there’s no warm presence nearby. For many of us in voice over, our pets aren’t just companions—they’re our coworkers, our comfort crew, and sometimes the only ones who hear every single take.
Here's a little story about how my own studio cats came into my life—and how they’ve truly become a part of my daily rhythm behind the mic...

A Life Without Paw Prints? Nope, never.
Back in 2016, after losing our beloved Scotch—the original studio cat—I felt the silence more than ever. That quiet wasn’t peaceful; it was hollow. If you’ve lost a pet, you know the feeling. The house just didn’t feel like home without that furry energy. Just a few weeks later, I knew I couldn’t handle it much longer. It was time to open my heart again.
Manx cats have always held a special place in my heart, and when I spotted an orange Manx up for adoption in Oregon, something just clicked.

I showed Jerry (my always-up-for-an-adventure husband), and we decided to fly up and meet him. One extra carrier later, we came home with three kittens. Yes, three. We just couldn't help ourselves—look at these faces!
A Serendipitous Trio
What started as one orange Manx turned into a trio of tiny, tail-quirky personalities. The moment I met the tuxedo and tabby siblings, I knew we couldn’t separate them. Watching them tumble over each other, full of sass and sweetness, sealed the deal.

We lovingly call them the Seblings—Sebastian, Sebrina (yes, spelled with an “e”), and Turq. Turq got his name from a dream our best friend had about a turquoise cat. And Sebastian’s name honors Jerry’s late father. These three have brought so much healing into our lives—not just from the loss of Scotch, but from the many emotional waves we’d both ridden over the years.
Purring in the Booth—and the Background

If you’ve seen any behind-the-scenes posts from my studio, you’ve probably already met them. They make regular appearances—usually napping during takes, sometimes jumping in right before I hit record, and always reminding me not to take things too seriously.
They’ve brought laughter, mischief, and a lot of cat hair into the booth—and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I know so many of you have your own studio sidekicks too, and I love seeing your photos and stories. There’s something so grounding about having a pet at your feet (or on your keyboard) while you work. They’re not just keeping us company—they’re keeping us connected to something softer, more present.

A Little Love Goes a Long Way, Doesn't it?

Our studio pets give us so much—and they ask for so little in return (besides attention, treats, and total control of our schedule). These three have helped me through hard days, brought joy into the quiet ones, and reminded me that sometimes, love shows up on four paws.
So here’s to the pets behind the performers. The curled-up cats and couch-loving pups who sit quietly through our 15th take, who greet us after a tough session, who make our studios feel like home!
If you’ve got a studio pet who’s changed your life, I’d love to hear about them. Post a pic. Share a story. And give them an extra cuddle for me.
