Many voice actors believe that once their demo is produced, the marketing is done. I hear it all the time from my students: “I have my demo—now I’m ready to get work.” I’m here to tell you the truth: your demo is not marketing.


Your demo is your product. It’s a sample of your work, showcasing your skills across genres and styles. As my friend Cliff zellman says, “A demo is a promise.” That promise is that you can recreate the performances clients hear on your demo—every time.


Marketing Takes Much More Than a Demo

Creating an amazing demo is just the first step. The next—and often bigger—part of building your career is marketing. In fact, marketing can take up 80% of your time.


This includes:

  • Networking: Building genuine relationships with clients, agents, and industry professionals.

  • Reaching Out: Sending emails, following up on opportunities, and staying on people’s radar.

  • Social Media Presence: Making sure your work can be discovered online.

  • Website Optimization: Your website should be easy to navigate, with demos easy to find and download.


Your demo is the tool; marketing is how you use it to get noticed and booked.


Your Demo Is the Product, Marketing Is the Hustle


Remember: your demo shows your capabilities. Marketing is how you sell yourself using that demo. Even the best demo won’t bring in clients on its own. You have to make yourself visible, accessible, and professional.

Think of your demo like a sample in a store. People won’t buy it unless they see it, understand it, and know why it matters. Marketing ensures that happens.


A great demo is essential, but it’s only the beginning. The real work—networking, social media, outreach, and website optimization—is what turns your demo into bookings. Treat your demo as a product and your marketing as the strategy to get that product into the hands of clients.
