Who Is Hiring You?

Before you even start reading, take a moment to research the company that created the script. What does their brand represent? What is their tone? Visit their website, check out past campaigns, and look at their mission statement. A company’s branding has momentum—it doesn’t change overnight—so aligning your read with their established voice can help your audition stand out.


What Is the Purpose of the Copy?

This is where you uncover the why behind the message. Beyond any direction provided, ask yourself: Why did this company create this script? Is it meant to sell, educate, or inspire? Understanding the deeper motivation behind the words adds richness to your read.


For example, if the script is a training module for a new cash register function, consider what prompted the change. Is the company trying to make things easier for employees? Improve customer service? If it’s a case study about a product helping a small town, why was this story chosen? Answering these questions brings depth to your narration and strengthens your connection to the copy.
