Most successful voice actors have a secret, they continue to coach regardless of how busy they get. They know that you can always improve, and feedback is the path to success. In this video, Anne talks about why and how coaching can help you reach your VO goals.

Question: If your demo is done does that mean that your coaching is done? Not necessarily.

I work with my students on setting goals and our goal when we were together is usually to create a demo at the end. So I'll coach until I feel that my student is ready to equal the performance that's going to be on the demo. But what's really interesting is that after the demo a lot of times I don't really see some students again.

So I think it's really important for all of us to continually coach throughout our career, no matter how long we've been doing this. One of the ways that you can benefit is you will keep yourself fresh and current. Sometimes you don't know what you don't know, and you're not hearing what you're not hearing, and so it really helps to have that extra set of ears listening to you and helping you. Maybe thinking a different way so that your performance can come through better, maybe channel some different characters, some different emotions that help you to discover a voice that maybe you never heard before.

That really is helpful when you're working with coaches and I have always said, go ahead and have a lot of different coaches. Because every one of them will bring something different to the table.

Another good reason to continue coaching is that will keep you from developing bad habits. I know even myself, I can get myself into this continual process of the same performance, the same performance, and sometimes that gets you into bad habits where you kind of zone out and just rely on those habits. Again you may or may not hear it. You may wonder, "Why am I not booking the way that I used to book" or"Why am I not getting any new clients?" Coaching with somebody every once in a while especially after you've done your demo can really help you to fine-tune and hone in on your performance skills.

It also allows you to learn brand new performance techniques that maybe are coming on trend these days. Another way to become authentic, another way to create a character or get into character. You also may get feedback from these coaching sessions that you didn't expect or something that makes you think of another way to voice, or another way to envelop the character. You should always be looking for the best way to really deliver the performance that your client needs.

Much love and Keep on rockin' your biz!

XOXO,

Anne
