Your Vocal Sound Matters

When you're recording yourself for an audition or connecting with a client, you need to make sure that the sound is high quality. The better the quality of your audio, the more people will like what they hear...

Connection is Key

One of the things many voice actors forget about is their internet connection. Having a sturdy internet connection will improve you audio, especially when connecting remotely with clients. For web-based browsers like iPDTL, a weak internet connection will create drop outs in your audio. You won't sound as crisp and clear as you need to for that perfect professional voice over sound.

Setting up a Booth

My booth journey has been a long one, but I am lucky that my current set-up was done by the incredible Tim Tippets. It gives me a consistent daily sound, which is important for doing pickups, revisions, and delivering consistency to my clients. You wouldn't believe how common revisiting a script is, and it is much easier to match yourself when you have the same audio sound. Recently, I had a client as me to do a revision on a script we had recorded 5 years ago!

My Gear Go-To's

I have gone through a lot of gear throughout my many years in voice over. I'm proud to say that I have a vocal sound that makes me sound my best, and my gear has a lot to do with it. Although I have a long list of Studio Gear that I recommend, these are my current favs...

Microphones

I alternate between my TLM103 (a large diaphragm condenser mic) and my MKH416 (shotgun microphone). These are common voice over microphones for a reason! They are high quality mics that will make your voice sound high quality.

Preamp

This preamp is popular for a reason: the UAD Apollo. I'd recommend the Solo or Twin, depending on how many mics are in your configuration. The preamp comes with some great plug ins and it never fails to make my voice sound clean and crisp.

Headphones

One of my favorite things in the world are headphones. I love the Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones, especially since they come in so many colors. Getting colors that fit within your brand helps you stand out on Zoom calls or podcast interviews and it makes every day a little bit more fun in the booth.
